The story behind the ranking

What the data is telling us.

The 90-day window ending January 2026 produced the most-concentrated AI hiring sprint of the post-ChatGPT cycle. Three findings:

First, Anthropic, xAI, and Mercor took three of the top five spots on quality-adjusted hiring velocity. Anthropic's capability-mapped slot model compressed senior research time-to-hire from 41 days to 19 between Q3 and Q4 2025. xAI tripled headcount in calendar 2025 while standing up Memphis Colossus — the largest single-site GPU cluster on the planet — in 122 days. Mercor's Series B at $250M post-money in September funded a hiring sprint that tripled direct-employed engineering headcount.

Second, the fastest-revenue AI startup of 2025 was a coding tool. Cursor (Anysphere) cleared $200M+ ARR with a team of 60. The Anysphere founding team rejects more senior IC candidates per role than any AI startup outside the frontier labs; Series C at $2.5B post-money Q4 2025 funded a measured expansion that retained the per-capita output advantage. Cursor's founders treat hiring as the dominant strategic decision — and the data shows why.

Third, the highest-pedigree founding team in AI history hired its first 80 employees in 2025. Mira Murati's Thinking Machines Lab (with John Schulman, Bob McGrew, and Barret Zoph as co-founders) closed the seed round at $2B post-money — among the largest seeds in tech history. Hiring grew from zero to ~80 senior researchers across 2025 with a near-100% offer acceptance rate. The competitive consequence for OpenAI and Anthropic in 2026 is not hypothetical; it is already showing up in offer-stage funnels.
